Moldy Gasket Project

Nu Fresh will remove the black stain evenually. But, it can take months 

We have a new product to quickly clean the black mold on the door gasket.

We are looking for people to help test out the new product (we want to make sure it works in lots of different situations.)

If you have a significant problem with gasket mold and would like to be considered for inclusion in the project please send an email with a picture of the moldy gasket to:

We need you to send digital photos for a before/after comparison. You can't be in the program without sending the pictures first.

Before we send out the Nu Fresh and cleaning kit we need to have digital pictures of the mold on the gasket on file.

For this project you will purchase a 2lb jar of Nu Fresh for 17.00 (about half price) to clean the machine. The mold is not just on the gasket. You probably will need two pounds to get control of the machine odor.

We will send you the two part cleaning kit along with your purchase of Nu Fresh.

It is free for the project participants.

We just ask that you help by reporting back to us.

Team members will receive a 5 lb bottle of Nu Fresh at the end of their participation.

After the project, your washer should be as clean as it can be. A 5 lb bottle should last you 10-12 months.

And, if it is not clean, we will keep attacking it until is is......


Explanation:

Over time Nu Fresh will get into the gasket pores and kill off the mold. But that can take months and people don't want to wait that long. So we came up with a two part kit to attack the mold directly. The kit contains a cleaner / sanitizer and a control treatment.

Cleaner / Sanitizer

The cleaner sanitizer will kill off the mold that is on the surface and little into the pores. It  does this with chemicals similar to those that are used in Nu Fresh but at a much higher concentration.

It will also bleach / sterilize anything on the surface and into the pores. It does this with another of the chemicals in the formula that will create a really strong solution of hydrogen peroxide directly on the surface of the gasket. It is similar to the "oxy" cleaners that are available just much stronger. Plastic gloves are provided to keep your fingers from getting bleached.

Control treatment

This is a wild card idea. This treatment contains a few different chemicals that are commonly used to control spoilage from fungus, mold and bacteria in food. Paint it on and let it dry. Some may go into the pores and keep things from growing. Theoretically it will do something. But will it be enough to notice...?  No way of knowing if this works until the people in this project tell me. 

You don't need gloves for this step. The materials are not hazardous. In fact they are FDA approved for consumption and topical wound sterilization ---- but I would not eat any of it. 
 
OK, now then, if you have a mold problem that is bad enough to get you into the project you also have a major build up in the machine itself. You are using way too much detergent and softener.

You need to run the Nu Fresh shock treatment at least 3 times. Or until the chunks of black mold to cease to show up on the rags/towels. If you don't see chunks stop at 3 shock treatments. 

It doesn't matter if you run the shock first or the gasket cleaner first. They should be fairly independent of each other.

Nu fresh

Gasket Cleaning and Treatment Kit

The kit consists of two parts.


Part A is a cleaner and sanitizer to remove the black mold stain.

Part B is a treatment to suppress further growth on the gasket.


Kit Contents:

1 Package of Part A (approximately ¾ ounce)

1 Package of Part B (approximately ¾ ounce)

1 Pair of Plastic Gloves for use with Part A

1 Pieces of Sponge for scrubbing the gasket.

1 Instruction sheet


Instructions:


Part A Cleaning & Sanitizing:


Safety Note: Part A contains Sodium Percarbonate and Boric Acid with some other ingredients. The Boric Acid is a weak acid and is not hazardous when used in this cleaning method. The Sodium Percarbonate will create a very strong hydrogen peroxide solution at the surface of the gasket when it comes in contact with water so gloves are provided to minimize irritation of the hands when scrubbing the gasket.


Step 1. Wet the sponge with water so it is not quite dripping.

Step 2. Rub the wet sponge over the entire gasket.

Step 3. Open package of Part A

Step 4. Sprinkle half of the powder on the lower half of the wetted gasket as if it was a     scouring powder.

Step 5. Put gloves on

Step 6. Re-wet sponge with water.

Step 7 Lightly scrub the lower half of the gasket with the powder while it is fizzing.

Step 8  Continue scrubbing and the water from the sponge will dissolve the powder.

Step 9 Sprinkle some of the remaining powder on the wet sponge.

Step 10 Scour the upper part of the gasket like the lower part.

Step 11 Cover with a damp rag and wait 8 hrs. Rewet upper gasket as convienient.

Step 12 Rinse off the sponge and gasket with fresh water for use with Part B.

Step 13 Let dry

Part B Gasket Treatment


The gasket treatment is performed the same way as the sanitizing treatment.


Step 1. Wet the sponge with water.

Step 2. Rub the wet sponge over the entire gasket. (It should still be damp from Part A treatment)

Step 3. Open package of Part B

Step 4. Sprinkle half of the powder on the lower half of the wetted gasket as if it was a scouring powder.

Step 5. Put gloves on.

Step 6. Re-wet sponge with water.

Step 7 Lightly scrub the lower half of the gasket with the powder.

Step 8  Continue scrubbing and the water from the sponge will dissolve the powder.

Step 9 Sprinkle some of the remaining powder on the wet sponge.

Step 10 Scour the upper part of the gasket like the lower part.

Step 11 Cove with damp cloth and wait for 8 hrs. Just let the upper gasket dry.

Step 12 Remove cloth and let air dry.
