Gasket Mold and Odor Control Ideas

Nu Fresh is the Answer to Black Mold on Door Gasket

Nu Fresh will disinfect the gasket surface as it is used overtime.
But, only a small amount gets onto the gasket with any given load.

It is as if the gasket and the machine tub are in two different worlds

That is why so many people have problems with gaskets
but do have not the mildew smell problem

The mold grows down into the pores of the rubber and is hard to get to.

It can take many months to clear up just using Nu Fresh in the wash.

SO...

To speed up the removal of the stuff on the gasket:

Make a paste with Nu Fresh, salt and, dishwasher soap kinda like the shock treament

Use equal amounts (about one ounce of each) with hot water

Put on some plastic gloves. The mold and bacteria slime is really yucky.

Wet a rag (damp not dripping) in hot water
and scrub the paste onto the gasket until it becomes a pasty mix.

Try not to dilute it too much. Do not be surprised if it "fizzes" a little as it cleans.

Scrub the treated area with a small scrub brush or sponge scrubbie

Do not rinse

Place the wet rag on top of the gasket where the mold is to keep it wet.

This procedure results in a very, very strong concentration of
the active chemicals right at the surface.

Let it sit for at least 8 hours lightly scrubbing every now and then
to get fresh pasty solution to the moldy areas.

When done, scrub off as much of the dead black mold as you can, then rinse clean.

This should remove all the nasty stuff on the surface
that could otherwise contaminate the laundry

Wipe a little of the remaining paste on the gasket to coat it.

Let dry. Any residue left behind will rinse out over time as the washer is used.
But it will continue to attack any residual mold in the gasket pores.

Repeat once a week until the black stain is reduced to a gray stain.

Don't repeat right away, there is a time lag for the effect to be complete.
(The mold spores down in the pores of the rubber gasket will bloom
and come into contact with the chemicals left behind from the paste. Gotcha! )

The remaining grey stain could disappear over time as Nu Fresh is used.
But not always

It will be clean to the touch though

And cut back on the amount of detergent you are using!

If you are getting a new machine and want to start out under control:

These instructions essentially kick start the control process.

Use Nu Fresh in the first three loads at 3 capfuls per load.

Then use normally as needed.

Since you are going to get detergent film on the plumbing
as soon as you use the machine, you should put down a coating
that has a high concentration of Nu Fresh in it.

That would be the most effective way of starting out using the machine.

Even if the machine had been used already,
a couple of Nu Fresh shock treatment flushes, should get
you back to a clean enough surface for this to also work.

It seems the contamination level is affected more by idle time rather than loads run.

So try to do this treatment within 2-3 weeks of starting to use the machine.

However, in most cases, the machine has been in use and has had a long time
to get the nasties growing into all the nooks and crannies of the plumbing.

Then you have to do the complete Nu Fresh shock treatment
flush procedure to get ahead of the build up of gunk.

After which you will fall into one of the categories below

Please note that these ideas have been effective in the past.

However, the new formula has made a big difference in control.

You will end up using less Nu Fresh than these suggest.
1/2 to 3/4 capful/ounce per load is enough now.

It is really hard to find a case where this new formula
will not knock out the odor completely

Typical use patterns

If you do many loads every week, a couple of loads almost every day:
You should not need to use a lot of Nu Fresh.
Start with a capful in every load until you get the odor under control
Then back off to one load twice a week
Note how long it takes for the smell to return.
You now know your range of control,increase as necessary

The new formula works a lot better

with first load of the week odor control for the tough cases:

If you do more than 3 or 4 loads a week but you do them over 1 or 2 days
with the machine sitting for most of the week:
Use Nu Fresh in the first 2 loads of the week and
the last 2 loads of the week for best chance of success

If you do 3 or less loads per week:
the machine will have a long time to sit and get stinky
you may need to add half an ounce of Nu Fresh to every load for the best chance of success.

If the machine sits unused for longer than 7-10 days:

you will need to run an empty load with hot water
to flush out the water that is in the plumbing
before you start doing the laundry.

The new formula has made an extra flush cycle unnecessary in a lot of cases.

Use Nu Fresh with the first 3 loads and
the last 2 loads

Nu Fresh will have maximum effect it you use it in every load you run.
But every load usually is only necessary until the odor is controlled.

More than one capful in a load is a waste of material, unless
you are trying to remove existing mildew smell from laundry or get control of a machine.
Then two capfuls would be the correct amount...
